The Science of the Supernatural

Featuring the Work of GMRI

At the heart of Miracle Series is a bold belief: truth can be tested—and miracles can be verified.

That’s why we’ve partnered with the Global Medical Research Institute (GMRI) to investigate with scientific rigor the miracles featured in the series.

What is GMRI?

GMRI is a nonprofit research institute led by Drs. Josh and Candy Brown, with a team of medical doctors, nursing professors, and scientific researchers, to investigate claims of miraculous healing. Their mission is to apply the gold standards of medical science and peer-reviewed academic research to cases of remarkable healing after prayer—documenting cases that defy natural explanation and publishing the results for the world to see.

Each case is evaluated by a team of medical specialists and researchers, using verifiable medical records, extensive research, and interviews with treating physicians and witnesses. The goal? To build a bridge between faith and science—and remove the stigma from believing in the miraculous.

Meet the Researchers

Dr. Joshua W. Brown

A Professor of Psychological & Brain Sciences with a Ph.D. from Boston University, former director of the graduate program in neuroscience at Indiana University, and author of over 90 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Science and Nature Neuroscience, Dr. Brown directs the Cognitive Control laboratory at Indiana University. He studies functional brain imaging, computational neuroscience, transcranial electrical neurostimulation, and artificial intelligence. His research focuses on how our brains organize our behavior to reach specific goals. His clinical research looks at how the brain goes awry in addiction and schizophrenia, and he is developing new electrical stimulation methods to treat addiction. After a life-changing experience of illness and healing through prayer, Dr. Brown became passionate about using scientific methods to study miraculous healing. He co-founded and chairs GMRI, the subject of his forthcoming book: Proving a Miracle: Unlocking the Power of Prayer to Heal, which is available Now for Pre-order.

Dr. Candy Gunther Brown

With a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. summa cum laude from Harvard University, Dr. Brown is a Professor of Religious Studies at Indiana University. Her books include Testing Prayer: Science and Healing, with Harvard University Press, and Global Pentecostal and Charismatic Healing, with Oxford University Press. While pursuing her husband’s healing, Dr. Candy Gunther Brown became aware that claims of miraculous healing through prayer are abundant globally and can be studied using empirical methods. She traveled the world observing how people pray for healing, distributed written surveys, interviewed people offering and receiving prayer, collected before-and-after medical records, collaborated with medical doctors and research scientists to conduct clinical trials of prayer, followed up with those reporting healing weeks and often years later, contextualized findings through review of scholarly literature in history, theology, anthropology, sociology, and biomedicine, and used quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze data. Examining healing experiences through multiple lenses revealed patterns useful in understanding the circumstances under which healing is most likely to occur. Dr. Brown found that many people who report miracles pray with persistence in the name of Jesus, welcome the Holy Spirit’s presence, repeatedly ask others to pray with them, and, grateful to experience God’s power and love, become active in praying with others, who in turn report miracles.

Together, the Browns’ expertise in clinical and social science research brings a level of credibility and depth to Miracle Series that elevates every story.

Why It Matters

In a world full of skepticism, Miracle Series declares boldly: the miraculous still happens.

But we also believe in the integrity of truth—and the power of data.

By blending beautiful storytelling with scientific research, Miracle Series offers something fresh: a spiritual and intellectual experience that challenges the mind and awakens the soul.
